The hotel itself was nice enough. Strange decor but clean and comfortable. The walls were thin so I heard people on the floor in the halls going to their rooms late at night. It woke me and I couldnt go back to sleep. The neighborhood is in the middle of nowhere and kind of run down. No businesses are really near the area so it's kind of depressing. On the bright side, the staff was courteous and quite responsive to my family's needs.

We got to the hotel at 12:30 am and there was still a doorman there ready for my arrival. The man grabbed our suitcases as well as opened the door for us to the hotel. After a quick check-in, the man also rode the elevator up with us to the room where he asked if there was anything else we needed. This exceptional service was consistent throughout our stay at The Alex. The room was extremely neat and clean, as well as spacious for a Midtown hotel. The bathroom was also very clean, with a beautiful shower. We had plenty of shampoo, conditioner, and body gel for the weekend, as well as q-tips and facial pads. The blow-dryer also came in handy. There were many treats (gummy bears, Swedish fish, almonds, cashews, etc.) available for purchase in the hotel room. Not that we needed one, but there was no refrigerator (so if you need one call ahead and they'll take care of it). The room was very peaceful and had a nice view of the city. The valet service was quick and efficient, and a walk to Times Sqaure was no more than 10 minutes away. We will be sure to stay at The Alex for every NYC visit!

Commentaire d'un client de Hotels.com le déc. 9, 2009
I chose the Alex hotel mainly because it was near the diamond district and we were in NY to find my engagement ring. The ring is gorgeous, but the hotel could definitely use some improvements. For one thing, there is no complimentary coffee in the rooms. If you're a coffee person, do not order it from room service. We paid $60 for a pot of coffee, hot water, and two tea bags. Also, there is no complementary internet. I realize it is common practice, in many hotels to make the guest pay for this service. But we had our own internet card (cricket) and the hotel server blocked it so that we had to pay for their service. My fiancee, a computer guy, was particulary upset about that. So, in the end, it's a lovely hotel with some good features, and an outstanding Concierge by the way, but given the fairly high room rate, I didn't appreciate being squeezed for every last cent they could get from us. Even the cheapest motel will give you a cup of coffee on the house.

Commentaire d'un client de Hotels.com le nov. 12, 2009
I know that many hotels in NYC don't have the largest rooms, but we found the room at The Alex to be almost unacceptable. Not only was the room very small, the furnishing felt like afterthoughts. The "closets" and "desk" were added after the fact and felt like Ikea dorm room furnishings. Also, re:maintenance, we had one burned out light bulb, one bulb not screwed in enough, an unusable alarm clock, and dead batteries in the TV remote. In the plus column was the staff. Great attitude, very helpful and a pleasure to deal with. We got the sense this is not the first time they've heard these complaints.

Room was good, although if I had paid full price I would have felt a bit ripped off. Now I am happy to pay a premium for valet parking. Even though the parking building across the street was $20 cheaper. 20 mins before leaving I called for my car. Then I went downstairs and waited. and waited. In the rain. Couple of points - I shouldn't have had to repeatedly ask them for an update. Also, if you can't find it AT LEAST offer me a coffee while I wait. 1hr and 45 min after I first called down they showed up with my car... needless to say I didn't tip

I've stayed at the Alex several times over the past 3 years. This visit will be my last. Checked into a room without hand towels or bath robes. Failed to deliver the paper to my room 2 mornings out of three. DVD player only worked when it felt like it. May seem like small stuff but at their rates, service should be first class. For NYC, I would regard my exerience as less than that.

We checked in to the hotel late Friday night. The room they had for us was given away even though we called to let them know we were checking in late. Having spent hundreds of hotel nights in NYC, I have to confess that I had never heard of the Alex until Hotels.Com "served" it up as an alternative. The Alex is an excellent mid-town boutique hotel. While I would not pay anywhere near "rack rate" for the Alex, at Hotels.Com's price, this was a great value. I would absolutely return.

Positives: Concierge and staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Location was very good for my taste (i.e., very easy and safe walk to Times Square, Fifth Avenue shopping, Central Park, other Midtown attractions without being in an extremely loud and busy block). Room made good use of small space. Negatives: Price was high for quality of room. Furniture was on the cheap side, things were not maintained as well as I expected for a hotel of this quality (for example, towel bar was loose to the point I thought it would fall off the wall, walls were scuffed and wallpaper was peeling). I did not use the restaurant or bar, so I could not tell you how they were, but there is a nice Irish pub next door with plenty of televisions and traditional Irish pub fare (as well as a decent beer list).

We spent a lot of time researching which hotel to stay in for our 8 day NY trip and finally decided on the Alex Hotel. We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived we received impeccable service and this continued throughout the duration of our stay. The room was fantastic, clean ,comfortable bed, nice bathroon and excellent TV. The location meant we were two blocks from Grand Central station which is ideal for on-ward travel. It is also a short walk to Times Square and Bryant Park. The hotel is in a financial area which meant that the area was quiet after 8pm. Overall a highly enjoyable experience.
